Point2paint in the App store

Jul 22 2011 - By George Webster

So Point2paint was an interesting project for me.  Basically the foundation is the drawing engine I have been iterating over the past few months.  While at first glance the app almost seems the same as the Little Fingers app.  There are several distance differences however.

First this app’s UI was entirely created using the app itself.  Actually an earlier version of the drawing engine.  Even though the engine was not nearly as smooth or fluid the icons all came out quite nicely.
I would have thought that perhaps the the desk look and classic finger paint feel would be more appealing.  However everyone I have personally tested the apps with seems to really enjoy the hand drawn UI.  They say it’s far more inviting.  They kids say it’s “cool”.

This all got me thinking a lot more about perception and it’s psychological effect on a user.  While one person’s nostalgia for the past invokes a certain appeal.. how much of that appeal is based on memory and how much and the actual experience?   Someone without the share memory of finger painting on a wood desk seems far more drawn to a fun hand drawn UI, one that invites them to touch and move things.
