BlastGroups started under the names Blastspot and BlastLounge, originally designed to be relief from the endless list-serves collage study groups were forced to endure. It very quickly ballooned into a comprehensive group communication software system. Focusing on group level communication while also catering to social networking trends so people could also communicate on a personal level.
This change drastically altered the site's original design scope so a massive overhaul was needed to deliver this capability. The site originally developed in India utilized php4 and mysql4. Quickly it was determined to require extensive objected oriented programming in order to handle this larger scope and allow for scalability both in functionality and number of users. To accomplish these tasks a local team of talented programmers and designers was formed to make this transition.
My role in these transitional developments was both application engineering and GUI layout coding in XHTML/CSS. We stripped down the code into basic "nodes" of functionality, and built the site out of three core objects, extending on top of those as needed. They front-end GUI (graphical user interface) is coded in pure XHTML/CSS, using as few images as possible for optimum load times.
While about 90% away from completion, BlastGroups.com hopes to make a full launch in the coming weeks.
